Viking Era toy boat (Faroe Islands)

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Jul 22, 2018 9:16 pm

The Faroe Islands issued two stamps on 10 April 1989 who shows us children toys from the Viking Era. The 350 value has a toy ship as its motif. The toy vessel was excavated in the village of Kitkjubour in 1955. It is 24.7 cm in length and carved out of driftwood. The vessel does not like an ordinary boat. The tall equally high stern and bow and markings on the topmost boards seem to indicate that it is an ocean-going merchant ship BYROINGUR which occasional must have docked at the Faroes during the Viking Era. However there are no indications of a deck, thwarts or mast hole. With its flat bottom the ship is probably an indoor toy.
