A wooden hulled training vessel built by the Koninglichen Werft (Kings Yard) in Danzig for the Imperial German Navy.
Autumn 1868 laid down.
18 December 1869 launched as the UNDINE.
Tonnage 624 tons max., 598 tons displacement, length 41.9m, beam 10.2m, draught 4.3m. Length bpp. 35.8m.
Brig rigged and she carried 1,035 sq.mt. of canvas.
Armament when built 8 – 12pdr, later changed to 6 – 8.0 inch guns.
The building was delayed by the Franco – German War of 1870.
Crew 8 Off. and 142 men.
21 May 1871 commissioned.
Her first voyage abroad was when she sailed on 12 July 1871 for a voyage to English, Spanish, Portuguese ports and the Cape Verde Islands.
01 May 1872 was she back in Kiel. Made in 1872/73 a similar trip.
After her return in Germany was she decommissioned and underwent an overhaul where after she sailed out again under command of Corvette Captain Köster on 14 July 1874 to 14 September 1875 for a training voyage to Rio de Janeiro and on her return voyage she called West Indies and USA ports.
1876 She made training voyages to the Norwegian North Sea coast. Then she underwent repairs in Germany.
From 1878 the UNDINE made only summer trips in the Baltic till 1884, during the winter laid up. In the autumn of 1884 she was used for training voyages to the Atlantic Islands.
1879 Decommissioned and on 1 April 1881 commissioned again.
28 August 1884 she stranded during an outward bound voyage for the West Indies during a severe storm with on board 90 boys and volunteers in position 56 48N, 08 14E South of Agger (North Jutland). In the accident one of the sailors went overboard during an attempt to cut down the mainmast after stranding and drowned.
The Danish rescue boat could not reach the wreck, and all the crew except one were rescued from the beach via a breeches buoy.
Stores and equipment were later salvaged from the wreck, but the UNDINE was lost.
