DJUPIVOGUR trading station

Post by aukepalmhof » Thu Aug 02, 2018 8:03 pm

This village at the head of the bay Berufjord developed around an important trading post in the past. In 1589 the German Hansa merchants were granted a trading license there by the Danish king. Later on, the Danish introduced the trade monopoly and took over themselves.

The stamp is designed after an illustration made by Auguste Mayer in the book, Voyage en Islande et au Groënland exécuté pendant les années 1835 et 1836 sur la corvette La RECHERCHE written by the Frenchman Paul Gaimard. More on the Le RECHERCHE is given on:viewtopic.php?f=2&t=13089&p=19273&hilit ... che#p19273

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Paul_Gaimard The book is an account of his travels to Iceland and Greenland.
It shows the trading station of Djupivogur in 1836 with a topsail schooner on the stamp and in the margin a hermaphrodite brig with some smaller boats.
