This village at the head of the bay Berufjord developed around an important trading post in the past. In 1589 the German Hansa merchants were granted a trading license there by the Danish king. Later on, the Danish introduced the trade monopoly and took over themselves.
The stamp is designed after an illustration made by Auguste Mayer in the book, Voyage en Islande et au Groënland exécuté pendant les années 1835 et 1836 sur la corvette La RECHERCHE written by the Frenchman Paul Gaimard.
