LIGHTER

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Oct 22, 2018 7:24 pm

Namibia issued in 1993 four stamps and a miniature sheet for the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Simmentaler cattle in Namibia, at that time German South West Africa.

Only the 60c has a maritime theme, we see a lighter, most probably at Luderitz, in 1893 the only port in German South West Africa. The lighter is coming alongside and some Simmetaler are visible in the hold.
The name Simmentaler is derived from the Simme river valley in Switzerland.
Outside Europe, Namibia was the first country where the breed was successfully established. The first imports were in 1893 by the government of the then German Colony, that promoted import for cross breeding, with a view to “improving the milk and beef production of the indigenous animals in the colony.

A “lighter” is a small vessel at that time mostly wooden hulled vessel employed in lightering goods. A strongly built rectangular open and flat bottomed, used for short haul work, especially for transferring cargo to and from ships lying at anchor.
Usually towed.
The word “lighter” dates at least from the late 15th century.
