A military sailor, one of the first Russian explorers of the Arctic, D. V. Sterlegov was born in 1707 in the Khlevensky district. In 1733, the sub-navigator D. V. Sterlegov was sent to the Ob-Yenisei detachment of the Great Northern Expedition (1733-1743) under the leadership of D. L. Ovtsin, who surveyed the coast between the mouths of the Ob and Yenisei. In 1734-1736, he took part in the inventory and measurements in the southern part of the Ob Bay in the two-mast dubel-boat “Tobol” under the command of D. L. Ovtsyn. In 1738 D.V. Sterlegov was promoted to navigators. Following the instructions of the Admiralty Board of DL Ovtsyn, the «Ob-Postman» boat was handed to F. A. Minin and instructed him to compile an inventory of the banks from the Yenisei Bay to the Khatanga River around the Taimyr Peninsula. On June 18, 1738, F. A. Minin and his assistant Sterlegov, coming out of Turukhansk at the mouth of the Yenisei on the «Ob-Postman» bot, attempted to go around the Taimyr Peninsula from the north. On August 23, sent by Minin ahead on Sterlegov reached the cape located at 73 ° 29 ′. sh. On it, he put a sign - a triangular frame of logs in nine crowns, and above it is a log with a cross. In 1738–1739, D. V. Sterlegov surveyed the Brekhov Islands at the mouth of the Yenisei. At the end of January 1740, by order of F. A. Minin, a land expedition led by D. V. Sterlegov traveled by sled dog from Turukhansk along the Yenisei, then moving along the sea coast in the northeast direction, the detachment passed the Pyasina estuary and on April 14 reached Cape (later called Cape Sterlegov) at a latitude of 75 ° 26´. sh. A lighthouse from a fin was built on the cape, and a letter with a report on the work of the party was left under it. The second lighthouse was installed by Sterlegov on the way back at 75 ° 10´ s. sh. Due to snow blindness, the team was forced to return. The results of the Sterlegov campaign were very significant. He managed to go to the northeast of the mouth of Pyasina farther than all previous expeditions. He carried out an inventory of the entire western coast of the Taimyr Peninsula, describing a section from the North-Eastern Cape to 75 ° 29 's. sh. Signs (lighthouses) placed along the coast in many respects facilitated subsequent sea trips. In the spring of 1740, the Admiralty Board decided to discontinue the squad. On August 4, 1741, the «Ob-Postmen» boаt arrived in Yeniseisk, from where D. V. Sterlegov headed for St. Petersburg to report to the Admiralty Board. In 1741 D.V. Sterlegov was promoted to midshipman. D.Sterlegov died in 1757.
