BÉÉRËWÉ double hulled outrigger canoe

Post by aukepalmhof » Tue Feb 19, 2019 8:14 pm

The “béérëwé” or “berewe” an oceangoing double hulled outrigger canoe depict on this stamp originally comes from the Fiji or Tonga islands. She is made of inexpensive materials with primitive tools.
She is used on I’ile des Pins in New Caledonia and looks almost the same as the “drua” from the Fiji Islands, with a lug lateen sail. A platform laid across connecting beams between the two hulls, which often had a deckhouse.
Steered with long heavy oars.
