KOOKABURRA QUEEN (2) stern wheeler

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Mar 29, 2019 11:09 pm

There are two steamboats in use in Brisbane named KOOKABURRA QUEEN, the vessel depict on the stamp is the KOOKABURRA QUEEN (2), her two funnels are before the bridge while the 1 has the funnels behind the bridge.

The KOOKABURRA QUEENs received their unique name in honour of the native Australian bird that is never seen to drink water – a prophecy that all boat
owners hope for their vessels!
Built in 1986 and 1988 respectively, the vessels played a major role in the 1988 World Expo. The Kookaburra’s were constructed entirely of Queensland timbers here in Brisbane and were the first wooden paddle-wheeler built in Australia last century.
The design was inspired by the paddle wheelers of Mississippi and New Orleans. The huge keel is made of ironbark, while spotted gum and ironbark ribs were steam bent to form the graceful contours of the 12 metre wide hull. The external decking is constructed with Queensland white beech and interior features premium grade western red cedar.
Each vessel spans 30.5 metres in length, has a beam of 11 metres, a draft of only 1.8 metres and a weight of 270 tonnes. The KOOKABURRA QUEENs are true paddle wheelers with their 50 x 450 x 1650 Kwila blades powered by twin 273 HP diesel engines in lieu of the traditional steam engines. KOOKABURRA QUEEN I features the paddle on the port & starboard sides whilst KOOKABURRA QUEEN II’s paddle is attached to her stern.
