TLC - 124 HMS

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Apr 01, 2019 7:32 pm

Niger issued four stamps for the 75th Anniversary of the Guadalcanal Campaign, The TLC -124 depict on the stamp has never been in the waters of the Pacific.

The landing craft depict on this stamp gives my some problems, the inscription gives that the TLC-124 is depict, a photo on the net which shows the TLC-124 beached somewhere, with a tank in front of it. By the photo is given A Crusader I tank emerges from a tank landing craft (TLC 124) during tests of a portable concrete roadway, in this case, laid on the beach, 26 April 1942. I am sure this photo is used to design the stamp. The two transports in the background are not identified.

Originally conceived in the United Kingdom and known as a Tank Landing Craft (TLC), the design was brought to the United States by a delegation from the Admiralty and was submitted to the United States Navy’s Bureau of Ships in November, 1941. After some design modifications, and with the concurrence of the Allies, the design was approved and the TYPE designator was changed to Landing Ship, Tank (LST, Allied Type II).

The set of stamps is issued for the 75th anniversary of the end of Guadalcanal Campaign.
There were two landing craft with the no 124 one built in the United Kingdom the other in the USA, but TLC-124 was never used in the Guadalcanal Campaign she was lost by the Dieppe raid on 19 August 1942. The other was used by the USA Navy, commissioned in 1943, but she is a complete different vessel as which is depict on the stamp.
