Pre-Hispanic Navigation in the Andean Region

Post by Anatol » Thu Apr 04, 2019 7:48 pm

Water transport has played a smaller role in the life of this nation, thoroughly mastered the land. At the Inca did not have the concept of "the sea", they had it Khatun-koch - "large lake." It was one of the main mistakes Inca psychology during their war with the Spaniards: the Incas could not even imagine that you can get reinforcements from the sea. They were not afraid of the sea, it did not give it a value. This is the main and the main block in the mind makes unfounded historically erroneous arguments of those who took a trip on a raft "concentration Tiki" (Thor Heyerdahl and his comrades in 1947 - Ed.).. The Incas were, according to Philip Ainsworth Means, "absolutely landlubber". The biggest vessel known in the Americas, was a Peruvian balsa raft. Raft formed balsa wood logs (Ochroma pyramidale), which grows from southern Mexico to northern Peru. Sun-dried balsa logs, which by nature have a buoyancy tightly tied together with vines. On the raft was a large square sail at the stern - rough deckhouse (see the classic pattern of the raft made von Humboldt.) With a roof of palm leaves, and behind it - the hearth cooking. The Indians used to change the direction of movement of the sliding flat keel (guaras);. As noted by Philip Means, "Quechua language or any other language of the people pre-Inca period, who lived on the coast, suffers a significant lexical poverty when it comes to navigation; it is a reflection of the general unsuitability of the people as a whole for navigation. " Balsa raft named word “uampu”. Balsa raft built from logs of wood Ochroma kind, occurring outside of Peru. It was the largest type of ship known Peruvians. It was invented before the Incas. Picture of Alexander von Humboldt, made in 1803. Redraw Alberto Beltran.

In margin of the miniature sheet of Peru, dedicated to archeology, shows the raft, which was water transport on the coast of Peru before the arrival of the Spaniards.
