The History of Sailing ships of the Oceania

Post by Anatol » Wed Apr 17, 2019 9:40 pm

Palau Post has issued miniature and large sheets dedicated to the old ships and boats of Oceania. On a small sheet, we see a replica of the BALS INCLET RAT built by Thor Heyerdahl, on which he crossed the Pacific Ocean. Text: “Early man noted that logs float. He learned that by lashing the logs or reeds together that he could propel himself through the water. Later he learned that poles and paddles could increase his speed, and finally he saw how sails contrived from matted reeds could open the vast horizons of sea and the open oceans”. TEPUKEI. Text: “A Melanesian Tepukei is a combination of tree trunks, palm fronds and fiber. This craft is indicative of man's first brave ventures on the water. Centuries before the European explorers braved the Atlantic, Pacific Island voyagers navigated their primitive crafts by the stars, bird migrations and stick charts”. TAINUI. Text: “The Tainui is a twin hulled Maori ocean-going craft which had a travelling range of thousands of miles, crossing the Pacific on voyages of migration. It is known for its practicality, strength, stability, and spaciousness for transporting colonists' possessions. It has huge claw-shaped sails and twin steering paddles. The ornamented stern posts added a touch of grace”. See more: viewtopic.php?f=2&t= 11388.
«WA».Text: “Long ago the primary form of travel around the island was by canoe. Most people lived along the coast, and there were canoes for every task and occasion, such as the sleek War Canoe, or the bulkier"Kaeb"canoe used to transport people from island to island. Few canoe craftsmen remain today, but there is always a demonstration of this essential craft at the "Senior Citizens Center" in Koror”. See more: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=16690.
«POPOW».Text: “Canoes carried courageous voyagers to distant Pacific Island homes hundreds of years before the early Western European explorers. Yap outrigger canoes gained extra stability from the boom-like extension's float, which helped in safely navigating the difficult currents, shoals and coral reefs found close to shorelines”.
