LOVIS tall ship

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Apr 26, 2019 8:36 pm

On her early history, not much I could find only that she was built as Danish steamer MALMÖ built in1897, owner and shipyard not known. I got also that she was built as a steam ferry in Sweden, but not any detail more given

1998 Was she rebuilt in a sailing training vessel and renamed on 18 March 2000 in LOVIS, the rebuilding was completed in the spring of 2000. Her details after the rebuilt:
Owner: B.Ö.E eV (Education, Ecology, Experience)
Displacement 170 ton. Dim. 37.50 x 5.50 x 2.44m. length of hull 26.99m.
Powered by an auxiliary 8-cyl. Deutz diesel engine, 200 hp., one shaft, speed maximum 6 knots.
Gaffel-Ketch rigged, sail area 410 m²
Berth for 33 persons
Homeport Greifswald, Germany.

The sailing ship LOVIS is a former steamship with the name MALMÖ and she was rebuilt after the model of the almost identical freight logger WILHELM LÜHRING in the years 1998-2000 as Gaffelketsch. Now used in the area of the North and Baltic Sea. The home port of LOVIS is Greifswald .

In July 2013, the LOVIS was stuck in Greifswald Museum Harbor, because her safety license on 30 June had expired because of the lack of a controversial safety certificate for traditional ships. Since July 25, 2013 she got again an operating permit of the Department of Ship Safety BG traffic. The volunteer crew was strongly against the plan by the Ministry of Transport for the 2018 new ship safety regulation for traditional ships, which would prohibit the operation of the LOVIS and a number of other traditional sailing vessels in the previous form.

With her new name, LOVIS, she has already seen more than during the long period before: Spitsbergen, almost the entire Baltic Sea the Kattegat and the Gulf of Bothnia, the Baltic countries and St. Petersburg, the British Isles, the Norwegian fjords. More than 60,000 nautical miles lay behind her.

2019 In service
