MARE FRISIUM tall ship

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Apr 29, 2019 9:03 pm

On the miniature sheet issued by Togo in 2018 is depict on the stamp the MARE FRISIUM, all the sources I have. is given that she is built in 1916 at Weert, Limburg in the South of Netherland as a ketch rigged fishing lugger for Dutch account but not an owner given, under the name PETRONELLA.

By looking on the site http://www.scheveningen-haven.nl/info/schepen which gives the luggers fishing from the main Dutch fishing ports, I did find one PETRONELLA SCH-314 built in 1916, but the yard on which she was built was not the Weerter Scheepsbouw in Weert, so she is not the vessel depict on the stamp. The name PETRONELLA is given to many fishing vessels.

It is given that the PETRONELLA was sold to Germany in the 1930s and rebuilt in a cargo vessel. When she was sold to Germany is not given. A website gives that she was sold on12 May 1930
The first time I found her in Lloyds Register 1930-31.

1982 till 1997 Again sailing under the name HELMUTH IMO No 5344592. Flag Sweden.
Under German flag, she was used in the Baltic and North Sea as a cargo vessel.

In 1985 was she anchored and laid up in a bay in Sweden, where she was found by a Dutch skipper who bought the ship and she was towed to Leeuwarden, Netherland were she was again laid up. A photo taken at that time shows she is sailing under the name HELMUTH. The intention was to rebuild her in a sailing vessel.

1995 In Leeuwarden the two brothers Bruinsma did see the ship and bought her for 100,000 guilders. She loved the hull lines, which would make her a very good sailing vessel.
She was moved to a yard in Franeker where she was refitted in a three mast topsail rigged schooner.
