SHIP STAMP SOCIETY

SHIP STAMP SOCIETY

Interested in Ships and Stamps? The Ship Stamp Society is an international society and publishes it’s journal, Log Book, six time a year.

The editor of Log book will retire this coming August and, unless a new one comes forward, the society will close.
With this in mind, we are not taking in any new members.
This is an unfortunate situation but seemingly unavoidable.

India issued in 1972 for the 100th birth anniversary of V.O. CHIDAMBARAN PILLAI one stamp of 20P which show us a portrait of him and in the background what looks like a passenger ship. I think it is more a stylized ship.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V._O._Chi ... llai#Stamp The GALLIA given on this web-site is the wrong vessel she never has been in India.

1906 he founded the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swadeshi_ ... on_Company

This company bought two ships in Franc the GALLIA completed in 1904 of 1,204 gross ton, a passenger-cargo ship and the LAVO of which I could not find any trace.

The GALLIA was from the second part of 1907 till 1912 in service for the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company in Colombo. She stayed in India for various owners till 1921 when she foundered at her moorings at Calcutta on 18 June 1921 still under the name GALLIA.

India 1972 20p sg 663, scott?.
