V.O. CHIDAMBARAN PILLAI

India issued in 1972 for the 100th birth anniversary of V.O. CHIDAMBARAN PILLAI one stamp of 20P which show us a portrait of him and in the background what looks like a passenger ship. I think it is more a stylized ship.

This company bought two ships in Franc the GALLIA completed in 1904 of 1,204 gross ton, a passenger-cargo ship and the LAVO of which I could not find any trace.

The GALLIA was from the second part of 1907 till 1912 in service for the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company in Colombo. She stayed in India for various owners till 1921 when she foundered at her moorings at Calcutta on 18 June 1921 still under the name GALLIA.
