SYDNEY TO HOBART yacht race

Post by aukepalmhof » Thu Jun 06, 2019 8:05 pm

The race is held from Sydney to Hobart, Tasmania was not the first open sea race to be held in Australia.
The first sea race was that from Sydney to Newcastle and back in 1864, which was the real start of ocean racing with sailing yachts in the Australian waters.
But the sailing competitions between Sydney and Hobart did not start until 1945 when the first competition with sailing yachts was held. Ocean competitions are now regularly organized over short, medium and marathon distances by various yacht clubs in Australia.
The first Sydney to Hobart race was the idea of Captain John Illingworth of the Royal Navy stationed in Sydney.
He suggested that a cruising yacht cruise from Sydney to Hobart be organized by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia if a race were to be held. He also showed how the yachts should be handicapped according to the rules of the British Royal Ocean Racing Club's formula.
Most of the participants in this first race were members of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.
Captain Illingworth himself was also a participant this first race, he was the skipper or the RANI. He also became Winner of this first race, he covered the distance Sydney - Hobart in 6 days and 14 hours and 22 minutes, he passed the finish 17 hours before the next yacht arrived this race.

This race is now one of the three most important sea races with yachts in the world. Ocean yachts of various sizes and class are now competing for the honor of being the first to finish in this race, and small yachts also have the opportunity to be declared victorious due to the handicap formula.
From the port of Sydney, the yachts sail south along the coast of New South Wales, after which they cross the Bass Strait and sail via the east coast of Tasmania upstream the Derwent River to Hobart.

Although most public interest goes to the yacht that arrives first, it is usually not the yacht that wins the race. Due to the handicap formula, another yacht usually wins the race.
In honor of the 50th race, three yacht clubs organized a Tasman Triangle Race.
The yacht clubs were the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the Royal Hobart Yacht Club and the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club in Wellington, New Zealand. This race started in Wellington, after which the yachts sailed to Sydney. Then the 50th Sydney to Hobart race was held after which the yachts continued to Wellington, where the end of this Tasman Triangle race was.
Two stamps issued by Australia on October 31, 1994 commemorate this 50th race between Sydney and Hobart. The design shows us the start of the Sydney to Hobart race with the spectator’s boats that followed the participating yachts to the starting line.
The other stamp shows us the yachts as they approach the coast of Tasmania.
Some historical facts of these races are.
1945 Was the first winner Captain John Illingworth R.N. with the RANI a 25 cutter.
1975 Was the fastest race so far when the KIALOA yacht with skipper Jim Kilroy traveled the distance in two days and 14 hours and 36 minutes and 56 seconds.
1945 was also one of the slowest races when the yacht WAYFARER only entered after 11 days and 6 hours and 20 minutes under skipper Peter Luke.
