The Alfa class of the Russian submarines were built on the Admiralty (Sudomekh) shipyard, Leningrad and SEVMASH shipyard, Severodvinsk for the Soviet Russian Navy between 1968 and 1981. All were in service by the Soviet Northern Fleet.
Displacement 2,300 ton surface, 3,200 ton submerged, dim. 81.4 x 9.5 x 7.6m. (draught on surface.
Powered by OK-550 or BM-40A, 155-MW lead bismuth cooled fast reactors, 40,000 shp steam turbine, one shaft, speed 12 knots surface, 41 knots submerged.
Test depth 350m.
Armament. 6 – 533mm torpedo tubes bow, 18 set-65 or 53-65k torpedoes, 20 VA-111 Shkval torpedoes and 20 mines.
Crew 31 (All Officers).

K-64 was the first unit which was commissioned, on 31 December 1971 and decommissioned 19 August 1974.
In 1972, the K-64 submarine suffered a major reactor problem in the form of a leak of liquid metal coolant. The superheated metal solidified on contact with the colder outside air, freezing and damaging internal components of the reactor. She was removed from service and towed to Severodvinsk. At the dockyard, the damage to the reactor was deemed too extensive for repair and the decision was made to salvage as much as they could. K-64 was split in half, its bow section (including control spaces) was taken to Leningrad and used for training new Soviet submariners.
Altogether 7 boats were built, the last two commissioned on 30 September 1981were the K-463 and K-493. All boats from this class have been decommissioned and scrapped.

The Alfa class, Soviet designation Project 705 Lira (Russian: Лира, 'Lira' meaning "Lyre", NATO reporting name Alfa), was a class of nuclear-powered attack submarines in service with the Soviet Navy and later with the Russian Navy. They were the fastest military submarines ever built, with only the prototype submarine K-222 (NATO Reporting Name Papa-class) exceeding them in submerged speed.

The Project 705 submarines had a unique design among other submarines. In addition to the revolutionary use of titanium for its hull, it used a powerful lead-bismuth cooled fast reactor as a power source, which greatly reduced the size of the reactor compared to conventional designs, thus reducing the overall size of the submarine, and allowing for very high speeds. However, it also meant that the reactor had a short lifetime and had to be kept warm when it was not being used. As a result, the submarines were used as interceptors, mostly kept in port ready for a high-speed dash into the North Atlantic.
