CARVALHO palhabote (schooner)

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Sep 01, 2019 9:37 pm

Built as a two masted “palhabote” (schooner) in 1937 on the island of Brava, Cape Verde.
Launched as the CARVALHO.

Have not more info on her, only that she was built with an oak hull.

2006 She was at that time in a poor state and underwent some repair.
The photo shows her under repair, not a year given when the photo was taken. https://mindelosempre.blogspot.com/2011/12/
At that time her owner is given as Henrique Ferro.

2019 If she is in service I am not sure, can’t find a trace of her.

Aak to Zumbra a Dictionary of the Worlds Watercraft gives for “palhabote”
Palhabote, she is a gaff-rigged schooner used for cargo and recreation. Generally carries topmast to which gaff topsails are set. Mainsail boomed, foresail sometimes boomed. Foremast may set a square sail in heavy winds. Working vessels set smaller multiple jibs and a staysail. Usually, clipper bowed and counter-sterned.
