E KUO Nauru traditional canoe

E kuo single outrigger paddling canoe used in Nauru and western Pacific.

Nauru Island lying to the west of the Kiribati Islands, the “E Kuo” is a family and fishing canoe. U shaped keel piece curves up slightly at the ends; terminating in a vertical cutwater. Strakes in multiple pieces, sewn on to form a wide “V” in cross section; thin, solid end pieces, washstrakes have slight tumble home. Short end decks; horn-like bitt projects from each deck. Long, slender outrigger float connects to two thin booms that piece the washstrake; each boom joined to the float by a forked stick and supplemental bracing; a medial boom crosses to but does not attach to the float; unit strengthened by light stringers.
Capacity to ca. 8 people.
Reported lengths 3 – 6m.e.g. length 5.4m, beam 0.66m, depth 0.4m.
