BICENTENNIAL OF DELAWARE STATEHOOD

Post by aukepalmhof » Tue Sep 17, 2019 9:37 pm

In 1987 the USA issued one stamp for the Bicentennial of Delaware Statehood the stamp depicts the great seal of Delaware.

On 7 December 1787 Delaware became the first state to ratify the new Constitution of the United States of America.

The first European person to explore the Delaware was Henry Hudson when he was in service of the Dutch East India Company in search for the north-west passage to the Indies. He entered the Delaware Bay on 18 August 1609 and claimed the land for the Dutch.

The strip of blue above the ox symbolizes the Delaware River, for many years the principal artery of commerce and transportation in the state.
The colonial farmer on the left holds aloft a model of a sailing vessel which is symbolic of Delaware early shipbuilding industry and coastal commerce.
