JOINT SPAIN-PORTUGAL ISSUE. 5TH CENTENARY OF THE MAGELLAN-ELCANO EXPEDITION
Every year Spain issues a set of stamps jointly with the post office of another country, in this case Portugal.
The issue marks the 5th Centenary of the Magellan-Elcano Expedition, which connects the two countries.
The mini sheet issued by Correos, with stamps die-cut on a globe of the world printed on parchment paper, shows the silhouette of a ship, representing the ships that first set out on the expedition: TRINIDAD, SAN ANTONIO, CONCEPCION, SANTIAGO and VICTORIA - the last of these was the only one to complete the journey. (Most probably she is depicted on the miniature sheet.)

The design is almost identical for both countries: over the ship, on one side is a portrait of Ferdinand Magellan, who appears on the Portuguese stamp, and on the other an image of Juan Sebastián Elcano, on the Spanish stamp.

The venture, wholly funded by the Spanish crown and starting and ending at Sanlúcar de Barrameda, was begun by the Portuguese sailor Fernão de Magalhães (Magellan) and concluded by the Spaniard Juan Sebastián de Elcano following Magellan’s death. Magellan was killed in a battle with native warriors on the island of Mactan in the Philippines, who were resisting forcible conversion to Christianity.
After this event, Elcano captained the VICTORIA from August 1521 to September 1522, when it arrived back in Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
Many experts consider this voyage to mark the start of globalization, as it involved many countries and territories.

This joint issue demonstrates the close alliance of Spain and Portugal, joining forces to present the first voyage around the world for UNESCO World Heritage recognition.
As the commemoration of this journey will continue until 2022, Correos will issue another stamp in that year to mark the end of the expedition.
