LOYAL is a galeasse that was built in 1877 by boat builder Knut Johannessen Nes in Rosendal in Hardanger . Knut Johannessen Nes often went by the name Gjøa-Knuten, since it was he who built the world-famous ship " GJØA, which after a time in fishing was purchased by Roald Amundsen and thus gave the hardanger jakt a status as a vessel of rank.
LOYAL was built like a freighter, intended to sail on the high seas. The capacity was up to 900 barrels of herring. It was primarily with a view to the Nordland shipping and fish trade in Iceland, as well as the large export market, that the ship was constructed. The galeasse were larger and more seaworthy than the jakt , and also had a more manageable rig, something that made sailing more easy and safe. One important point was also that a galeasse meant reduced crew costs.
At the time when LOYAL was built, it started to move towards the end for Norwegian sailing. The Great Tribulation came to an abrupt end around 1880. But LOYAL proved to live up to its name, sailing LOYAL, year in and year out, in shipping, both in Iceland and with cargo to ports in the Baltic Sea such as Königsberg , Riga , St. Petersburg , Stockholm , Norrköping , Kalmar and Karlskrona , and to countries such as Germany , Denmark , France , England , Spain and Portugal - yes, they even round Cape Horn with clipfish for Chile . It is also told that she transported some material to the Statue of Liberty in New York.
Only in 1932 was the engine installed on the ship. But she kept her sails and sailed far into the 1950s.
In 1928, LOYAL was purchased by Martin Kathenes from Tysnes, together with three companions, also from Tysnes. Martin Kathene made a model of the ship, which is now in Tysnes Church as a church ship.
In the 1970s, LOYAL was purchased by a private person, John Hausberg from Sotra , who together with his son Audun Hausberg spent over 20 years to restore "LOYAL", which was re-launched in June 1997. Today, LOYAL used as a tourist and adventure boat based in Bergen or Forlandsvåg on Sotra. LOYAL has its own friend association, "LOYAL Friends", with about 500 members.
2019 In service, same name and owners.
