Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Oct 27, 2019 7:01 pm

Mauritius issued three stamps and a miniature sheet for the 40th Anniversary of the Indian Ocean Islands Games, one stamp and the same stamp in the MS shows us yachts used in this games.

The small yacht on the left of the stamp is an “optimist” viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9654
The other yachts I believe are all “laser” (dinghy) viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11033&p=16847&hilit=laser+dinghy#p16847

2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the Indian Ocean Islands Games, (IOIG) - (1979-2019)
Since 1979, IOIG are held among the islands of the Indian Ocean. The objectives of the games are to contribute to regional cooperation through the development of sports in the region, build friendship and mutual understanding among the peoples of the islands of the Indian Ocean. Along the spirit of Olympism, the Games allow athletes and the youths of the Islands to meet every four years and celebrate the fraternity among all participants while competing in different disciplines. There are presently seven islands participating, namely, Comoros, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mayotte, Réunion and Seychelles.
Historical notes
It is worth mentioning that the regional meet in sports in the past was mainly in football. There used to be a well-known regional triangular competition in football among Madagascar, Mauritius and Réunion during the period 1947 to 1963. However in 1974, the Réunion Regional Olympic Committee proposed a multi-sports competition among the islands of the Indian Ocean. The International Olympic Committee approved it in 1976 and the first games were held in Réunion in 1979. And since then eight other IOIG were organized on a rotation basis among Réunion, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles.
The 10th edition of the Indian Ocean Islands Games 2019 in Mauritius
Mauritius is proud to be organizing the 10th edition of IOIG this year from the 19th to the 28th July. This is the third time Mauritius is organizing the Games after the 2nd and 6th editions in 1985 and 2003 respectively. The Games will comprise of more than 2000 athletes and 14 sport disciplines, namely; athletics, badminton, basket-ball, beach volley, boxing , cycling, football , judo, rugby, swimming, table tennis, volley ball, yachting and weightlifting. The events will be held in different sport infrastructures in Mauritius and the mini marathon and judo team competitions will be held in Rodrigues. Handisports competitions will be held in athletics and swimming. Moreover 3 sport disciplines, squash, golf and horse riding will be in demonstration during the games.

Such an event while promoting the level of sports and culture in the region is also an enabler to develop further the sport infrastructures in the host countries. The Government of the Republic of Mauritius and the Ministry of Youth and Sports have invested massively in refurbishing existing sport infrastructures and have constructed a new comprehensive sports complex, known as Cote d’Or National Sports Complex at Cote d’Or, which will remain a landmark in the sports panorama of our country.

The Rs 21 stamp illustrates the very concept of the ocean link among our Islands. It depicts the sailing competition which will be held in different categories at Grand Baie.
