50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE SWEDISH MARITIME RESCUE AT SEA SOCIE

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Nov 10, 2019 6:45 pm

50th Anniversary of the Swedish Maritime Rescue at Sea Society.

The stamp issued in 1957 shows in the background a lifeboat trying to come alongside a vessel, who it looks like want to transfer a wounded or sick crew member to the lifeboat. The design shows the crew members of the vessel still wearing cork lifejackets, which were around 1914 replaced by kapok life jackets in the U.K. When replacing in Sweden I don’t know. http://thethingsienjoy.blogspot.com/201 ... edish.html has a photo from around 1920 of a Swedish lifeboat crew, and it looks like the crew still wearing cork lifejackets.
The same website gives that in 1912 the rowing lifeboats were replaced with Hutchinson-Kay type motorized lifeboats, and it looks that this type is used on the stamp.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Swedish maritime rescue service was in such poor condition that it was used as an international example for management failure.
In 1903, the Swedish coasts were devastated by severe storms that took many human lives at sea.
In the same year, a World Congress on Marine Rescue was held in Germany. There, Sweden's ability to rescue from a vessel in distress was judged to be very neglected. Attending the congress was Albert Isakson, a shipbuilding engineer at Lloyd. He decided to go home to Sweden to spread the message and bring about a change.
The Swedish state showed a keen interest in Albert Isaksson's vision of an effective national maritime rescue service. Instead, he gathered private representatives from Swedish shipping to a meeting in Stockholm on June 1, 1907. When this meeting ended, an organization had been founded, the Svenska Sällskapet för Räddning af Skeppsbrutne.
