GAMBIA LOCAL WATERCRAFT

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Nov 17, 2019 7:51 pm

The Gambia issued in 1990 8 stamps in the Gambia Life series, of which 3 stamps show us watercraft used in the waters of Gambia.
The Gambia used traditional boats in her coastal waters and on the Gambia River. They must be strongly built when used in the coastal waters, which can be severe with strong tides.

50B shows us a map of Africa and with on top inserted a map of Gambia. On the bottom of the stamp is loaded, what looks like bags of groundnuts, which is a cutter-rigged vessel under sail.

1D shows us canoes on the beach near a holiday resort, I could not find a Gambian name for this type, but it is the same type as what is used in Senegal under the name “gal” viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11468&p=14809&hilit=gal#p14809

2D Shows the shrimp industry and the same type of canoe depict as on the 1D stamp.
More info on the Gambia shrimp fishing is given on: http://innri.unuftp.is/proj05/Ebou05PR.pdf

Gambia 1990 5Db, 1 and 2D sg 825,829 and 832, scott992/994/996.
