Figureheads of royal barges of Thailand - IV

Krabi class barges have figureheads from the Hindu epic Ramayana. These vessels are lacquered, gold-gilded, and decorated with glass pieces. The “PHALI RANG ТНAWIP” barge have on its bow an image of Vali - the king of monkeys and the kingdom of Kishkindha. This green monkey wears a crown, ornaments, and Panung (Thai-style long loincloth). Legend has it that Bali is a brave king. He travels across continents from East to West and from North to South every day to pay respect to the sun. This barge was built in the reign of King Rama I.It is 27.54 meters long and its bow is equipped with a cannon. It requires 34 oarsmen.He have crown on his head with his body colors green. The “SUKRIP KHRONG MUEANG” barge have on its bow the image of Sugriva, Bali's younger brother, whom he succeeded as ruler of the kingdom of Kishkindha. Ruma was his wife. He was the son of Surya, the Hindu deity of the sun. As king of Kishkindha, Sugriva helped Rama in his quest to free his wife Sita from captivity at the hands of the Raksasa king Ravana. He have crown on his head with his body colors red.
