In 1951 France issued a stamp to honour the poet Arthur Rimbaud, the background of the stamp recalls one of his works “The Drunken Boat” and depicts a sailing ship drifting out of the mouth of the river and into the stormy sea.
The ship floating aimlessly down the river is to symbolize Rimbaud’s own life and desires.
