NUYINA icebreaker

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Dec 13, 2019 7:09 pm

This stamp shows us a ship still under construction, and most probably many stamps will be followed in the coming years with her depict on it.

Built as an icebreaker research and supply vessel under yard no 417 by Damen Galati Shipyard, Galati, Romania for the Australian Government.
08 September 2017 laid down.
24 September 2018 launched as the ASRV NUYINA.
Displacement 25,500 ton, dim. 160.3 x 25.6 x 9.3m. (draught)
Powered by ? Maximum speed 16 knots, cruising 12 knots.
Cargo capacity 1,200 ton general and 1,900 m³ fuel for the Antarctic basis camps. Also 96 TEU’s.
Accommodation for 117 passengers. Crew 32.
Carried up to 4 helicopters.
It will be delivered in 2020.

NUYINA is Australia's upcoming Antarctic icebreaking research and supply vessel (RSV), intended to support Australian bases on that continent. The vessel can deploy a wide range of vehicles, including helicopters, landing barges and amphibious trucks to support the resupply operation. The new ship provides a modern platform for marine science research in both sea ice and open water with a large moon pool for launching and retrieving sampling equipment and remotely operated vehicles.

Design and construction
The original concept was developed by the Danish engineering company Knud E Hansen, and the design and construction is being managed by the Dutch Damen Group, which built the vessel in its Romania yard.
Following contractual agreement on 28 April 2016 with DMS Maritime Pty Ltd (trading as Serco Defence) for delivery, operation and maintenance, the ship’s design and construction was contracted to Damen Group. Design was contracted to naval architects Knud E. Hansen of Denmark. The keel laying was in August 2017[ at Damen’s Galați shipyard in Romania. Coins from Denmark, Netherlands, Romania, and Australia, were welded to the keel as part of the keel laying. As of March 2018, about 7,000 tons out of 10,000 had been cut and the base of the hull had been completed. In September 2018 the hull was successfully floated in the building dock and taken to the outfitting quay.

Naming
On 29 September 2017, the name NUYINA was announced by the Minister for the Environment, Josh Frydenberg. The name is the word in the palawa kani language of the Tasmanian Aborigines for the southern lights. The name was suggested by school students in a competition, and is jointly attributed to students from St Virgil's College in Hobart and Secret Harbour Primary School near Perth, Western Australia.
The name NUYINA evokes the names of previous ships involved in Australian Antarctic research and investigation:
AURORA AUSTRALIS (1989–present), Australia's current icebreaking research and resupply vessel
SY AURORA (1876–1918), used by Sir Douglas Mawson for exploring the continent (1910–14) and Sir Ernest Shackleton

Service
NUYINA is expected to arrive in its home port, Hobart, in 2020, and make its first voyage to Antarctica for the 2020-21 summer season. It will be operated by Serco Defence under the direction of the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) for the Australian Government.

End August 2020 RSV NUYINA has been towed from Galati to Vlissingen, where she will be prepared for sea trails, by the Damen’s yard in Vlissingen (Flushing). The ship will be delivered in 2020, after which she will operate from her homeport of Hobart in Tasmania, where AAD headquarters is located.

Built in 2017-'21 by Damen Galati Shipyard, Galati, Romania, #417, completed at Damen Schelde, Vlissingen, IMO.9797060.

The polar expedition ship was designed by Danish Naval architect Knud E. Hansen A/S, Helsingør. Technical details of the ASRV 15626 are: 20.828 gt, 8250 dwt 25,400 ton displacement – L.o.a. (p.p.) x B x D (d) = 160.50 (152.00) x 25,60 x 19.20 (9.20) metres. Four dieselgenerators have been installed for diesel-direct or diesel-electric hybrid propulsion of two controllable pitch propellers (2 x 13,300 kW), three bow and three stern thrusters in tunnels (6 x 1300 kW), maximum speed 16 knots, cruising speed 12 knots or 3 knots in 1.65 metres ice.
The bunker capacity is 4330 m3 MDO, range: 16,000 nautical miles and/or endurance 90 days. The work deck has a surface area of 500 m2. Spacious capacity for the transport is available of up to 1200 tons of cargo/6500 m3 or 96 TEU.
For handling equipment and cargo, two knuckle boom cranes with a safe working load (SWL) of 55 and 15 tonnes respectively are available. The deep tank for the transport of fuel has a capacity of 1900 m3. The ship is equipped with a helicopter platform with a surface area of 760 m² and a hangar of 330 m² for 2 Sikorski S92 or 4 Eurocopters. Accommodation has been provided for 32 crew members and 116 scientists.
The management of the vessel will be entrusted to DMS Maritime Pte. Ltd. (Serco Australia). The Lloyd’s Register Polar Class 3 classified icebreaker is intended for Australia’s scientific, strategic and ecological interests in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. Port of registry becomes Hobart on Tasmania, where the headquarters of the Australian Antarctic Division is located. The Nuyina replaces the research vessel Aurora Australis (1990 – 6574 GT), which has been laid up since 28 March 2020.
The vessel is expected to arrive in its home port of Hobart in mid-2021 to commence Antarctic operations in next year’s Southern Hemisphere summer season.
