In July 1968, Sweden issued two stamps to commemorate the 4th General Assembly of the World Council of Churches at Uppsala, Sweden. The design, which is the official symbol of the Council. Shows a boat with a cross for a sail.

Mr. Erik Ahlquist gives an explanation of the symbol:
He gives, the ship or boat is an old symbol for the Christian Church and the cross is the symbol of faith. Together they form the following: The faith, symbolized by the cross, is the sail or power, which drives the Christian Church, symbolized by the boat, ahead.

He gives that this symbol, carved in stone and dating from about the year 1200, and is placed above one of the entrances to the church of the small village in Southern Sweden where he was born. This stone was one of the few things which were spared from the old church (dating from the same period as the stone) when it was leveled to the ground in about 1880.
