THÉLEMAQUE 1770

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Jan 22, 2020 4:14 am

Seychelles Islands issued in 1970 a set of stamps for the 200th anniversary of the first settlement on St Anne Island, two stamps show us a French ship with the year 1770, at that time only the French merchant vessel THÉLEMAQUE visited the island, another stamp issued for the Independence Day in 1972 shows us again the same vessel. I do not believe there is a painting of print of the vessel, so it must be a vessel of that timeframe. Both issues have a lot of differences in the ship depictions.
Of the French vessel THÉLEMAQUE, I could not find much information, were built, when and fate are a mystery.

Only Wikipedia has something on the vessel as given below.
Seychelles was claimed by France in 1756. Seychelles remained uninhabited until the first settlers arrived on board the ship THÉLEMAQUE, which arrived on 27 August 1770. Captain Leblanc Lecore landed the first colonists, comprising 15 white men, eight Africans, and five Indians. The Seychellois Creole language developed as a means of communication between the different races.
