SMS KONINGSBERG (I) and PIET PRETORIUS in dugout

Post by aukepalmhof » Tue Feb 18, 2020 6:50 pm

2014 MARKS 100 YEARS SINCE THE START OF World War 1. Also known as The Great War, in which Great Britain, France, Russia, Belgium, Italy, the United States and other allies defeated Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey and Bulgaria. The total number of military and civilian deaths was more than 16 million and 20 million wounded ranking it among the deadliest conflicts in human history.
.German East Africa Campaign:
General Jan Smuts was put in charge of this campaign, a series of battles and guerrilla actions that started in German East-Africa and ultimately affected part of Mozambique, Northern Rhodesia, British East Africa, Uganda, and the Belgian Congo.

South Africa issued a miniature sheet with 6 stamps, of which two stamps show watercraft, the first shows a dugout canoe.
The stamp shows General Jan Smuts in the top right corner, and his personal scout, Piet Pretorius, scouting in a dugout canoe to find the exact position of the SMS KONINGSBERG in the Rufiji Delta. The SMS KONINGSBERG viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8665 is depicted in the background of the stamp. Pretorius spied on behalf of the Allies disguised as an Arab fisherman. A reconnaissance route-map is depicted inside the canoe.
