200th Anniversary of the Discovery of the Antarctic Continent and navigators Faddei Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev

The honor of the Antarctic Continent discovery belongs to the Russian Antarctic expedition of 1819−1821 on the VOSTOK and MIRNYI sloops commanded by Faddei Bellingshausen (1778−1852) and Mikhail Lazarev (1788−1851). On July 16, 1819, the expedition went to sea. The Antarctic coast was actually discovered on January 28, 1820.

The results of the round-the-world expedition of Bellingshausen and Lazarev were considered among the most considerable events in the history of the global geographical explorations.

The stamps of the postal block provide the portraits of F. Bellingshausen and M. Lazarev; the margins of the block show a group of sailors against the Antarctic scenery within the background the two vessels MIRNYI and VOSTOK.

Discovery of Antarctica 200, Estonian-Russian Joint Issue
1820 was a breakthrough year in the history of the discovery of Antarctica. The continent, which since ancient times had been rumoured to exist, finally was revealed to humankind. Antarctica was first sighted by the Irishman Edward Brasfield, the American Nathaniel Palmer and, as the first, the commanders of the Russian expedition Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev.
Destiny gave Bellingshausen the symbolic role. German by ethnicity and Estonian-born, he was a Russian Navy admiral steeped in British seafaring traditions and possessing international experience.
Bellingshausen is a good vehicle for telling the story that led to an Estonian expedition to Antarctica 200 years later – exploring and caring for the Earth is the great overarching mission for all nations and countries in the 21st century as well.
