Built as a helicopter destroyer by IHI Marine United in Yokohama for the Imperial Japanese Navy.
11 May 2006 laid down.
23 August 2007 launched as the JS HYÛGA (DDH-181), she was the lead ship of her class. Named after the Japanese Province Hyūga.
Displacement: 14,179 ton standard, 19,000 ton full load, dim. 197 x 33m.
Powered; Cogag by four General Electric LM 2500 geared turbines, 100,000 hp, twin shafts, speed over 30 knots.
Armament: 16 cells Mk 41 VLS, 16 ESSM, 12 RUM-139 VL ASROC, 2 -20mm Phalanx CIWS, 2 – triple 324 mm torpedo tubes and 12.7 MG.
Carried 3 x SH-60K and 1 x MCH-101 helicopters, maximum up to 18 helicopters can she carry.
18 March 2009 commissioned. Homeport Maizuru.


JS HYÛGA (DDH-181) is the lead ship of the Hyūga -class helicopter destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).
The ship was built by IHI Marine United and commissioned into military service on 18 March 2009.

Service
This ship delivered supplies and undertook in disaster relief operations after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
HYÛGA became the first Japanese ship to have an American MV-22 Osprey land aboard it during exercise Dawn Blitz in San Diego, California on June 14, 2013.
In June 2017, HYÛGA along with JS Ashigara joined the US Navy's Carrier Strike Group 1 and Carrier Strike Group 5 off the Korean Peninsula in response to increased tensions over North Korea's nuclear weapons program.
