She was built as a ballistic missile submarine of “Project 667A” under yard no 432 by Severodvinsk Shipyard in Severodvinsk for the Soviet Navy.
12 October 1968 laid down.
25 April 1970 launched as the K-420.
Displacement 7,766 ton surface, 9,300 ton submerged, dim. 129.8 x 11.7 x 8m (surface).
Powered by two pressured water-cooled reactors powering four steam turbines driving two shafts. Speed surface 13 knots, submerged 27 knots.
Range: unlimited.
Armament 4 – 533mm torpedo tubes and 2- 400mm torpedo tubes and 16 – R-27 (SS-N-6Serb) SLBM’s.
Crew 120.
29 October 1970 commissioned.

In accordance with a Soviet government decree of December 9, 1976, the development of a new class of naval strategic weapons — the supersonic ( M = 2.5-3.0) KR Meteorit-M with the ZM25 KR with a range of more than 5,000 km, began

Project 667M Andromeda - modernization of the K-420 submarine for testing strategic supersonic (M = 2.5-3.0) CR Meteorite-M with a range of more than 5000 km.

To test a new missile system in Severodvinsk in 1980-1985, the K-420 was converted. During the modernization, the fourth and fifth missile compartments were cut out, a new section of three compartments was installed instead. On each side of the rocket compartments, between the sturdy and lightweight hull, there were 6 containers for supersonic missiles.
The first launch from a submarine took place in the Barents Sea on 26 December 1983. In 1984, a series of 21 test launches were carried out. In the early 1990s, work on the project was discontinued.

Wikipedia has on the K-420 submarine:

Yankee Sidecar (Project 667M Andromeda) Also known as Yankee SSGN, this was another single-ship class (in this case K-420) converted into an SSGN. It appeared in 1983, carrying 12 SS-NX-24 nuclear-tipped cruise missiles instead of the original ballistic missiles. The SS-NX-24 was an experimental cruise missile, with a supersonic flight regime and twin nuclear warheads. It was meant as a tri-service strategic weapon, and thus would have filled a rather different role than the tactically-oriented Oscar-class SSGNs of the same era. In the end, the missile was not adopted, and K-420 became a weapon system without a weapon. It was fully 13,650 tons displacement (dived), and was even longer than the Yankee Notch to accommodate the massive cruise missiles; it was 153 m (502 ft) long overall To test a new missile system in Severodvinsk in 1980-1985, the K-420 was converted.
