CROCIERA ITALIANA passenger ship

In 1924 Italy issued a series of stamps with King Vittorio Emmanuele III with the overprint CROCIERA ITALIANA. Not a ship is visible on the stamp only the name of the ship is mentioned.

She was built as a passenger-cargo vessel under yard no 242 by A.G Vulcan in Stettin for the Norddeutscher Lloyd in Bremen.
24 June 1899 launched as the KÖNING ALBERT.
Tonnage 10,643 gross, 9,700 dwt, dim. 158.60 x 18.30m.
Powered by two 4 cyl, quadruple expansion steam engines, 8.200 hp, twin shafts, speed15 knots.
Passenger accommodation for 227 first, 119 second and 1800 tween-deck passengers. Crew 230.
September 1899 completed.
04 October 1899 opened the new fortnightly service from Germany to Japan, at that time was she the largest ship in the East Asia service.
She was also used in the service between Europe and New York, Baltimore and in the New York - Italy service.
August 1914 sheltered in Genoa, 25 May 1915 chartered by Italian Government but then seized. December 1915 renamed in FERDINANDO PALASCIANO and fitted out as a hospital ship, with a capacity of 1000 beds.
May 1920 was she chartered to Navigazione Generale Italiana, Genoa.
15 June 1920 first voyage in the service between Genoa-Naples-New York.
27 May 1923 by royal decree registered in the Royal Italian Auxiliary Navy and renamed ITALIA and refitted as a floating trade exhibition.
In 1924 the ITALIA visited every Latin American port city with a significant Italian community, onboard was Italian made industrial and artisanal products and artworks.
20 October 1924 she returned in La Spezia after visiting 31 ports in Latin America.
After her return, she was sold or arrested by Banco di San Giorgio in Genoa.
Third-quarter of 1926 scrapped in La Spezia.
