About Europa 2020 - Messenger Post
This year's Europa stamps, which are issued every year by the member states of the association of European public postal operators (PostEurop), focus on the theme of ancient postal routes. Philately combines its two commemorative stamps "Stagecoach" and "Mounted Messenger" (both with a face value of CHF 1.50) as a combination print on a miniature sheet of two stamps twice. Designer René Wolfinger made the issue appear nostalgic through steel engraving.
If you look for ancient postal routes in Liechtenstein, you will inevitably come across the Lindau Messenger. This was a transport service that operated between the trading centers at the time in Lindau at Lake Constance and the Italian city of Milan up to 1826 and carried goods, money and letters. It is assumed that the Lindau Messenger was already travelling along the arduous route, which reached its peak on the Spleen Pass at 2113 metres above sea level, on a fairly regular basis towards the end of the 15th century.
One of the five legs of the journey led the Messenger on his way from Feldkirch southwards through present-day Liechtenstein, which he left again at the Luziensteig in Balzers towards Chur.

Mr Bjoern Moritz gives on his new ship stamp page that in the margin the vessel entered a port in Lake Constance, and he is right she is entering the port of Lindau. By comparing photos on the net, the vessel depict is a Lädine.

A Lädine or Ledine is a historic barge that was used as a type of ship between the 14th and 20th centuries for around 500 years in Lake Constance. The Lädine is similar in type to other cargo sailing ships that were common in Central European inland waters. The smaller edition of the Lädine is called Segmer or Segner .

Structure and development
The structure of both types was uniform, but the dimensions differed in the five neighboring states of Lake Constance. The load capacity of a Lädine was up to 150 ton with a mast height of 24 m, a length of 32 m and a width of 4 m. The draft was 1.17 m to 1.46 m, the freeboard 0.35 m to 0.42 m. The four types of Segmer had a load capacity between 7 ton and 75 ton and were up to 20 m long.
In 1764 there were about a thousand freighters on Lake Constance, 150 of them Lädine, the number of which shrank from 60 to 70 by 1824. At the turn of the century, only a few sailed. Some were equipped with 5 HP petrol engine or towed by steamships. Most were broken up for firewood, like the last original Lädine in Bodman in 1952.

Transportation concept
As a means of transport, in the age of carts with bullocks and horses, cargo shipping had several advantages over overland transport, namely that it was faster, cheaper and more reliable. Today, in the age of trucks and highways, this only applies to so-called bulk goods if the start and endpoint of the transport via waterways can be reached by cargo ship.
According to the state of the art at the time, flat bottomed carvel-planked sides, rounded and flared wooden hull, a wide-bladed rudder hung from the port quarter, one-masted.
Barges were used, which could sail with the wind with a huge mainsail. When the wind was calm, you had to either row, pull or pole on the lake to get to your destination. Headwind meant waiting in the port because cruising without a keel was not possible. There are often complaints in the historic sources about violations of the Christian Sunday rest since it was better to use the available wind than too laboriously and tediously row or pole. With the rounded bow, it was possible to beach the vessel and load and unload the ship away from the ports.

Transport goods
Using Lake Constance as an example, it can be said that valuable table salt loads were shipped from Bavaria to the west, building materials and agricultural products from the other neighboring areas of the lake in the opposite direction. With a stiff breeze, it took a Lädine from Linde eight to ten hours to cover the 63 kilometers along Lake Constance. Grain and barrels of wine are also known as historical goods. Regarding the transport of wine, it is reported that there was typically also wine as a wage for the team so that a place in the crew was highly sought after on such a trip and it was consumed in large quantities on the outward journey.

A historical Lädine (more precisely: Segmer) was rebuilt by the Lädinen-Verein Bodensee eV with headquarters and homeport in Immenstaad and put into service on May 9, 1999. The 17-meter-long and 20-ton ra-sailer has been going on regular tours out on Lake Constance and take paying guests with it. For sudden windlessness and other emergencies, the ship is equipped with a 120 hp diesel engine. The Immenstaader Lädine is one of the most striking and largest sailing boats among the around 55,000 ships that are officially approved on Lake Constance. Half a dozen club members have already acquired the master's license required for the ship's command. For this, a hundred hours of practice had to be proven on board. Furthermore, tests in navigation and weather science had to be taken. In the first decade, there were 70,000 passengers who boarded the replica barge.
