«Kabekel»-War Canoe of Palau

Post by Anatol » Sat Apr 04, 2020 7:33 pm

In 1986, the Palau Post issued 3 stamps in memory of Haruo I. Remelik, First President 1981-1985. Haruo Ignacio Remeliik (1 June 1933 – 30 June 1985) was a politician from Palau. He served as the first President of Palau from 2 March 1981 until his assassination on 30 June 1985. He is buried at Kloulklubed in his home state of Peleliu. Remeliik was of mixed Japanese and Palauan descent. One stamp depicts the «Kabekel»-war canoe."Kesebekuu" (eel) is replica of the original Kesebekuu Kabekel (war canoe). The original Kesebekuu Kabekel was carved in 1914 but never took part any tribal or village wars. Rather, it became famous historically for its speed, speed therefore became its historic significance. During the German administration it won several races in national events. It also claimed two trophies during the Japanese administration. The name of Airai's War canoe is "Double Headed Eel".This famous siamese moray eel lived at the bay of Ngerang, Melekeok. At first the eel was starving because the two heads thought of things and did things separately. Its movements were restricted and strained as a consequence. Moreover, the two heads became frustrated. They finally had a meeting and decided to coordinate their desires and movements so that the one tail could do them more good. This idea was tried and found to be a successful one.It was soon to be known also as the fastest eel in the sea. Likewise, the "KESEBEKUU" war canoe became famous throughout Palau.
