In 1980 the Portuguese island Madeira issued a long series of stamps to commemorate a Tourism Conference, one value the $30 stamp depicts a typical small sailing vessel as issued by the inhabitants of the small village of Camara de Lobos , which is situated some nine kilometres from Funchal, the capital of the island, Camara de Lobos is a lively and colourful port, deriving its name from the animals which lived there at the time of the first settlers. These animals were known as “lobos do Mar” (sea wolves) (seals), while Camara de Lobos means “Wolves Shelter.”
A frequent visitor to the village was Sir Winston Churchill, who found there the inspiration for many of his paintings depicting fishing villages.
The boat on the stamp is a wooden fishing boat with one mast with a square sail, colourfully painted, today these boats are all motorized. I could not find out if the type of boat has a name, in all the sources she is given as a fishing boat.
