KATHERINE HMS Royal Yacht 1661

Post by aukepalmhof » Thu Aug 06, 2020 9:40 pm

Two yachts (built in 1661 and 1674 respectively) carried this name. The stamp probably shows the KATHERINE built in Deptford in 1661 according to plans by Phineas Pett, based on a picture by Willem van de Velde Jr., the first yacht specially built for King Charles II.

Built at Deptford Dry-dock as a royal yacht.
November 1660 ordered.
1661 Launched as the KATHERINE.
Tonnage 94 ton (bm), dim. length of keel 49.0 ft, beam 10.01, depth 07.01ft, draught 07.01ft.
Crew 30 maximum.
Armament 8 cannons.
22 March 1661 commissioned, cost £ 658.

Her first commander was Captain John de Gens.

King Charles II was on board on 05 June 1672 to meet his fleet, which was returning from the battle of Solebay / Lowestoft - a well-known painting by van de Velde., shows her. She is the vessel on the left of the painting.
17 August 1673 the Dutch warship SCHIEDAM captured the "KATHERINE" in the battle of Kijkduin / Texel. It was later returned by Prince Willem van Oranje as a gift to Alderman Backwell. In 1677 she was used for Princess Mary’s marriage voyage to Holland but was usually assigned to the service of the Board of Ordnance.
Fate unknown.
