ABEILLE brig 1801

The stamp is designed after a painting made by Pierre Clement Marie Clausse “Cobat de Deux Bricks” this battle took place on 26 May 1811 and shows us the British HMS ALACRITY in action against the French L’ABEILLE. The stamp shows ABEILLE firing a broadside into the stern of ALACRITY.

Built as a wooden brig rigged 16 gun vessel at Toulon for the French Navy.
24 December 1800 keel laid down.
24 June 1801 launched as the ABEILLE one of the Abeille-class.
Tonnage 350 ton, dim. 32 x 8.7 x 3.5m.Armament 16 – 24pdr. carronades.
Sail area 750m².
Crew 84.
21 May 1801 completed.

04 August 1801 destroys the Minorca privateer SAINT JOSEPH near the Levant Island near Toulon where after she returns to Toulon.
1803 Under repair.
17 April 1806 a unit of a flotilla of four gunboats.
May 1806 in action against the HMS SIRIUS at the mouth of the Tiber River, Italy.
1808 In Naples for an overhaul.
26 May 1811 captured HMS ALACRITY after a battle of more as an hour between Corsica and Elba.viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17391
16 October 1814 sailed from Toulon together with the frigate JUNO, corvette VICTORIEUSE, the L’ALACRITY and the schooners ROSE and BACCHANTE forming the Levant Station.
26 May 1815 returned to Toulon.
1824 Hulk.
16 September 1827 based in Brest.
1831 Refurbished.
1835-1844 Probably disarmed.
14 November condemned and used as an anchor depot in Brest.
Not a fate given but in 1865 was she renamed MOLENE.
