Painting from French warships at anchor

Post by aukepalmhof » Thu Aug 20, 2020 9:24 pm

The 4 R stamp issued in 1972 shows us also a painting or a detail most probably from the Napoleon time, but till so far I have not found the painting, there are many vessels most probably at anchor on a road, she is not under sail. Most paintings at that time show warships under sail. On the left is a French ship-of-the-line, looks like a three-decker. Who has more info on the painting after this stamp was designed.

The stamp of Arab emirate RAS AL KHAIMA-4riyals-copy of a picture: «Napoleon III receiving Queen Victoria at Cherbourg, 5 August 1858».
The meeting took place on board the French flagship, "Bretagne".
The Bretagne was a fast 130-gun three-decker of the French Navy , designed by engineer Marielle. She was built after the90-gun Napoléon in 1855, and also was fitted with a steam engine while under construction, though she had been laid down as a sail ship. The ship had a full rigged and boiler rooms, located on either side of the huge main mast. Built in Brest battleship "Bretagne" was the second-largest wooden-deck ship of all existing. Displacement-5289t; steam engine-4800shp; speed-12,6knots. She took part in the Crimean War in 1855.
