SIR GEORGE GOLDIE and shipping on Niger River

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Sep 20, 2020 7:52 pm

The stamp shows us a merchant hulk, native canoe and paddle steamer on the Niger River; Portrait of Sir George Goldie. Have not any information on the hulk and other watercraft on the stamp, Navicula gives by the stamp:

In the first years of trading in the Niger area, the trading agents lived on hulks (= dismantled old ships), which were anchored in the middle of the river for safety reasons. A large part of the trade was initially carried out in canoes. The traders who wanted to expand the trade soon introduced paddle steamers on the rivers. First steamers with side paddle wheels, which were common at the time, were used. Later steamers with stern paddle wheels were used. The ‘hulk’ pictured carries the flag of the 'Royal Niger Company'. The company's emblem is on the funnel of the paddle steamer.

Sir George Goldie-Taubman: ... (1846-1925) was the founder of the former British colony of Nigeria and from 1905-1908 President of the 'Royal Geographical Society'.
