LANDING OF NEW ZEALAND TROOPS IN GALLIPOLI ON 25 APRIL 1915

New Zealand issued in 2008 six stamps in the ANZAC series of which the 50c stamp shows us the landing on 25 April 1915 of the Auckland Infantry Battalion landed there around 11.00 am. By the stamp is given by New Zealand Post.

The Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey was the founding location for the ANZAC tradition. In April 1915, this small finger of Europe jutting into the Aegean Sea was a war zone, with New Zealand and Australian troops joining the British in their campaign to defeat the Turks. The campaign was a costly failure for the Allies – among the dead were 2,721 New Zealanders – but it forged a new sense of ANZAC confidence and comradeship. The photograph shows the Auckland Infantry Battalion landing at what would later become ANZAC Cove.

The watercraft visible are landings boats of which the nearest looks like a wooden hulled lifeboat.

Of the landing boats is given:
The landing boats are pulled by steamboats, which in turn are pulled by warships. The tows pull three kinds of landing boats: lifeboat (28 men); cutter (30 men); launch or pinnace (60–98 men).
