Canoe from Eastern New Britain
There are 4 different types of canoe bows in this set of stamps. The one on the stamp depict is known as Kuku. You can find it on the Gazelle peninsula. The indigenous canoes, though small, are very seaworthy and are powered by paddles. After a trip, they have pulled ashore and covered with palm leaves. The bow is also covered with banana leaves to protect the canoe from the sun and rain. The canoes are sometimes used in connection with funeral ceremonies.
