BOW OF A SEPIK WAR CANOE

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Oct 19, 2020 8:24 pm

Sepik War Canoe: Canoes of various sizes and qualities are made along the entire course of the Sepik River. She can carry up to 7 men. The bow carving of this typical war canoe depicts a crocodile head and is usually named after a local god of war used to guide and protect the men.
Behind the crocodile's head, there is a shield that is coated with white clay and decorated with a human head. During combat, it is the job of the first rower to protect the shield from enemy spears. If he fails, he will be attacked by the men of his own crew. These canoes are used a number of times to carry the bodies or heads of slain warriors.
