The stamp issued by South Africa showing the first settlers landing in Algoa Bay in 1820 is designed after a painting made by Thomas Baines. The landing of British settlers in 1820: The landing boats belong to the first British immigration ships “NAUTILUS” and “CHAPMAN”, which entered Algoa Bay (Port Elizabeth) on March 10th, 1820. The ships were accompanied by HMS “MENAI”.

The picture is by William Baines, 1820-1875, born in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, who came to South Africa in 1842. He was known not only as a painter but also as an explorer. He traveled to South West Africa and the Victoria Falls in 1861. He died in Durban.

The stamp design is vague, but on the painting, you can see:
It looks that a larger boat tows two ships boat alongside, but what the hawser hanging from the stern and bow in the water is used for, can be a system used by many ferries in the Netherlands to cross a canal or river as a pulling hawser?
