FLEET REPLACEMENTS in CYPRUS

Cyprus issued in 1993 a stamp for the “Merchant Fleet replacement” which shows us an ancient sailing ship and a modern coaster. From the coaster, I did not have any details.
I believe the ancient sailing ships is designed after an image of the Kyrenian trading ship, depict on the Cyprus stamp issued in 1987 on the 17c sg709 see: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10099&p=10507&hilit=Kyrenia#p10507

Every two years, distinguished personalities from the international shipping world come to Cyprus on the occasion of the "Maritime Cyprus" conference to discuss matters of crucial importance regarding the shipping industry. The shipping conference took place for the first time in 1989 and a second one followed in 1991. In total 1600 participants from 34 countries took part. At every such conference, Cyprus has the chance to get a full picture of development and trends in shipping from distinguished scientists and businessmen in the field. This helps improves its infrastructure. The 1993 conference will take place in Nicosia from 4-6 October and over 900 ship owners, shipping company managers, directors, and higher officials from Banks, admiralty lawyers, and accountants will be participating. The conference participants will study the problem of the renewal of the international merchant shipping now steadily becoming a threat to the environment because of the growth of its average age.

A large number of trade ships were used as only the Athenians had to transport around 150,000 tons of grain per year. Again the problem is that almost none of these ships survived in our times but there are a few exceptions when the wrack was covered with some sea ground material. Such a case was the so-called Kyrenia ship that was discovered in 1968 in Cyprus, a version of a trade ship used in the Hellenistic times. The Kyrenia ship as experts have found was used for around 80 years and they assume that it was for three generations owned by a family of shipowners (naukleroi). It was possible to find that one of the ship trading routes was Samos - Kos - Rhodes - Cyprus, probably not more than 4 sailors were needed. It carried more than 400 Amphoras.
