19 December 2011 donated to the Vietnam Coast Guard and renamed CSB 8003

August 26, 2013, commissioned after being repaired and upgraded at Hong Ha Shipbuilding Company is the 8003 patrol boat. 81.5m, 9.8m wide, depth 5.8m; full load draft: 3.0m; full load displacement of 1,400 tons, main engine capacity of 3,888 KW x 02; maximum design speed: 20.7 knots.

After being received from abroad, the ship has been improved and replaced with a number of modern equipment such as observation systems, communication, radar, life, and firefighting. The control system of 8003 is modern and belongs to the "Top" in the region and the world. The ship is not only capable of transmitting voice to voice but also has the ability to transmit images on the voyage to the command center of the Vietnam Coast Guard, creating favorable conditions for direction, especially when their complex situations arise.

At the time of the HD981 oil rig standoff back in 2014, the Vietnamese Coast Guard only had one large patrol ship: CSB-8003. The CSB-8003 was a 1500-ton patrol ship that had been donated by South Korea. Even as the Coast Guard's largest vessel, it was still dwarfed by its Chinese counterparts (as seen in the photo)...and while that may have not been a big deal at first, it's important to note that there were no other ships in the Vietnamese Coast Guard that were at the same size as CSB-8003...all were smaller. With the need for more vessels of a larger size, the government diverted funding to the Vietnamese Coast Guard in the aftermath of the standoff. Damen's shipyards in Vietnam began manufacturing the 2,400-ton DN2000 patrol vessel.
In 2014, CSB-8003 was the only large ship in the Coast Guard. Today in 2019, the ship is joined by eight 2400 ton sister ships of the DN2000 class - four for the Coast Guard, another four for Vietnam's second maritime law enforcement agency, the Fisheries Resource Surveillance. With one 3250-ton Hamilton cutter obtained from the United States (there are plans to obtain another one) and two 4000-ton DN4000 patrol ships that are in the works, the Vietnamese Coast Guard is a far cry from the 2014 force that only had CSB-8003 as the lone single large vessel.
