During the icy winters of the late 1970s, the three ice-strengthened ferries DISA, VESTA, and YLVA proved too small for the ever-increasing passenger travel. A new ice-strengthened vessel was therefore ordered at Djupviks Varv and the new building was preceded by the aluminum vessel SKARVEN, which had already been ordered at the shipyard. The new ship FRÖJA got an underwater hull which was a further development of the ice-strengthened YLVA from 1951.

FRÖJA is the Old Norse name for the goddess of love and had previously been worn by the 1951 FRÖJA.

FRÖJA was the first modern motorboat that got a saloon also on the upper deck to be able to get as much seating as possible indoors for winter traffic. The vessel has a heavily ice-classified steel hull that Falkenbergs Varv built as a subcontractor to Djupviks Varv. In 1993, an upgrade was carried out with new furnishings, roofs over sun decks, and new engines. In the autumn of 2012, the salons received new chairs.

FRÖJA is 29.19 m long and 7.72 m wide. It can accommodate a maximum of 382 passengers and has 200 seats in salons. After engine replacement in October 2014, FRÖJA is powered by two Volvo Penta D16 MHs with a total of 1,100 hp (808 kW) which are connected to an adjustable propeller. The speed is 12.5 knots.
