LA LUA TRADITINAL CANOE

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Feb 12, 2021 7:16 pm

This stamp issued by Wallis et Futuna shows us a “la Lua” better known as “kalia” of which Aak to Zumbra a Dictionary of the World’s Watercraft gives:

Was used by the Wallis Islands and the central Pacific Islands.
She is a large double canoe, extinct since the early 20th century. Two plank-extended. U-shaped hull, one longer than the other, were secured ca 1.8 – 2 m apart by crossbeams on which a large platform was set. House built on the platform and as many as 100 people could be transported. Hull ends elongated and pointed; bottom sharply curved; ends enclosed. In the area of the platform, the dugout was raised above the gunwale level; a transverse coaming closed off the hull at the edge of the platform; a central hatch over each hull permitted bailing. Steered with a long-paddle.
Raised a single lateen type sail to a sharply forward raking mast stepped into the larger hull.
A replica wrecked in 1965 carried two leg-of-mutton sails.

(The stamp shows us a two-mast canoe with rectangular boom lug sail, can’t find an accommodation house on the platform.)
Reported lengths 15 – 18m.
